I copied that title (Beginner problems…) from a post on the old forum because I’m having I think a similar problem with a disappearing/reappearing hatch. I’m posting this now, after much exasperation, because when I selected a rectangle for some other purpose, a hatch pattern (solid fill) that had disappeared suddenly reappeared. No idea why. Oh, and clicking (well away from the problematic hatch-filled rectangle) seems to toggle visibility of hatch…that toggles a “selected” counter between 0 (hatch visible) and 1 (not visible), so the hatch might be on my “background” image in layer 0. why the hatch would have been on layer zero I don’t know. Still working on understanding… Edit: clicking, which toggles visibility not only of the hatch in one rectangle but also the visibility of a circle, does not change the “current layer” reported bottom right of the dwg. And oddly, when the circle is NOT visible a rectangle IS visible (but without its hatch) - and when the circle is visible the hatch that sb in the rectangle is visible. Sheesh.
This sounds more like a selection/redraw issue than the entities actually changing layers. One important detail: the current layer shown at the bottom is the layer where new entities will be created; it does not necessarily show the layer of the entity you selected.
A few checks should narrow it down:
- Select the hatch and the circle separately and open Entity Properties to verify their actual layer, color and line/fill settings.
- Check whether the drawing looks correct in Print Preview or in an exported PDF. If it does, the geometry is probably fine and the problem is only the on-screen redraw/selection overlay.
- Force a redraw, then test the same hatch and circle in a new empty document. Also check for duplicate or overlapping entities and the draw order of the solid hatch.
- If possible, attach a small DXF containing only the affected objects, plus your LibreCAD version and operating system. That would make it much easier to distinguish a file/layer problem from a graphics-rendering bug.
If the objects still alternate visibility only when the selected counter changes between 0 and 1, I would suspect a rendering or selection-highlight issue rather than layer visibility.
Welcome @HelmZalee !
Always post info about your LibreCAD version (See Help/About). This helps to find out if this is a known issue and if it is probably already solved.
Hatch and its limiting contour can life on separate layers, so it is possibly intended behaviour.
Use Modify => Properties or Attributes to show and modify the layer of entities.
Thanks, sorry about that, here’s the Help/About:

Win 10 must be the version in which the app was built. I downloaded the install exe 9/6/2026. I’m using Windows 11 Home V 25H2.
Many thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I have since closed (and now reopened) the app and cannot reproduce the problem.
Curious, though, about “Select the hatch…and open Entity Properties…” I can find no way to “…open Entity Properties” after selecting an entity. I can see properties by (1) clicking Tools/Modify/Properties then (2) clicking on an entity.
